The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an alleged incident between state Sen. David Lucas and a grandson of Macon-Bibb District 3 Commission candidate Terry Tripp.

Tripp is running for the seat against Lucas’ wife, Macon Councilwoman Elaine Lucas, according to officials from the sheriff’s office.

According to an incident report filed by Tripp’s daughter, Kinya Miller, the incident took place at a Lucas campaign event Wednesday evening at the Lakeview Apartments clubhouse at 2800 Masseyville Road.

David Lucas on Thursday denied grabbing anyone, saying he was only acting as a peacemaker after his son, Lenny Lucas, got into a verbal altercation with members of Tripp’s family.

David Lucas said he began to lose his temper when one of Tripp’s grandchildren started shouting at him, but other people stepped in and restrained Lucas before any physical confrontation took place.

“Someone shouted ‘Fight!’ and I ran over there,” he said. “My son had taken off his shirt and was ready to fight. I stepped in between them. … Folks grabbed me. I didn’t touch no 13- or 14-year-old.”
