Cherokee Tribune – State Rep Calvin Hill dies at age 66

CANTON — State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Canton) died Wednesday at the age of 66 after a brief battle with cancer. He represented District 22 in the state Legislature, where he served for more than 10 years.

Hill, who was diagnosed with leukemia this summer, was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2002, and before that had served two terms as mayor of Ball Ground.

Rep. Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) said he will be deeply missed by his fellow Cherokee County lawmakers.

“He was our leader, our bedrock, our foundation. He was our chair, he showed us the ropes, how to interact with the local government, the intersection of state and local government,” Ballinger said. “He always led by example. I am very sad he is gone and we have lost that leadership. My heart goes out to the family.”

Rep. Scot Turner (R-Holly Springs) agreed Hill will be missed by the entire community.

“Speaking of Calvin as a person, he has always been a great encouragement to me. He took the time to sit with me and he was always unselfish with his time,” Turner said Wednesday. “He will truly be missed and it is a huge blow to the community. I think he was someone who put his constituents first. He was a public servant.”

Hill was serving as vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and Banks and Banking Committee. He was also on the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee, State Institutions and Property and Special Rules Committees.
