Athens-Clarke County Animal Services is seeking foster homes for the Independence Day weekend, according to the Athens Banner Herald.

Fireworks are traumatic for many animals, including pets, so the Animal Services department is making an extra push to get animals into foster homes that weekend.

The event is especially worrisome for the adoption center’s dogs; most of the shelter’s kennels are outdoors.

Foster pickups will be scheduled on Thursday and Friday, with returns set for Sunday and Monday. Animal Services will be closed, Saturday, July 4.

Fostered animals are current on rabies vaccine and spayed or neutered if they are old enough.

For more information contact volunteer coordinator Selah Gardiner at selah.gardiner@acc.gov.com or 706-613-3540.

More information is also at the Animal Services web page.

August, a Golden Retriever aka Augie, is the oldest known dog of her breed, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.

There have been accounts of goldens living to 17 or 18, and even a few stories about 19-year-old goldens, but Augie is the first to reach 20, according to Golden Hearts, the blog that first shared the dog’s story.

The GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue in Maryland confirmed the news, writing in a Faceook post that Augie is the “oldest known, oldest living Golden Retriever!”

On April 24, Augie celebrated her 20th birthday with her humans, Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt, and her three furry siblings at their home in Oakland, Tennessee.

Augie was adopted by the Hetterscheidts when she was 14 after being rehomed twice. Jennifer Hetterscheidt was working at a golden retriever rescue organization in Nevada as the intake director. As soon as she laid eyes on Augie, she fell in love, she said.

While Augie was already a senior dog when she was adopted, that didn’t stop her and her family from taking road trips across the country and spending entire summers at the pool.

Charlie Adopt A Golden Atlanta

Charlie is a senior male Golden Retriever who is available for adoption from Adopt A Golden Atlanta in Atlanta, GA.

Hi Everyone!!! My name is Charlie. I’m a big fluffy and very handsome 12 year old Golden Retriever. I have had a very interesting life so far. I spent the first several years of my life as a Border Patrol dog!!! It’s not easy being in law enforcement. I had to be very serious all the time and constantly be on watch. As a result, I’m not your typical goofy Golden.

It takes me some time to get to know people, so you must be patient with me as I become familiar with you. In my line of work, I had to be on guard all the time, so since I have retired those old habits are tough to break.

I’m looking for a forever home where I can spend my retirement, taking it easy in the peace and quiet. I’m not crazy about other dogs so I would need a home where I am an only dog. I do like cats though!!! I need a tall fence and no children in the home. I had so much excitement as a border patrol dog I am looking to find a quiet home without a lot of commotion and visitors. I can be left alone for a little while if you need to go out for a bit. If visitors do come over, I can go into my own room and be quiet too!

Rusty Humane Society Morgan County GA

Rusty is an eight-year old male Golden Retriever mix who is available for adoption from the Humane Society of Morgan County in Madison, GA.

Rusty is a mature gentleman of simple needs and few demands. Rusty like all Goldens loves human companionship and will be happiest when he’s in your company. If you want to experience on of life’s most rewarding blessing consider adopting a senior!!! Rusty may be the man for you!

Duxi Circle of Friends Animal Society

Duxi is a male Golden Retriever and Dachshund mix who is available for adoption from Circle of Friends Animal Society in Greensboro, GA.

Duxi is roughly 36 pounds and 4 yrs old. He has the short legs and body of a dachshund but the long hair coloring and face of a golden. We know for a fact that his dad was a dachshund mix so we are assuming his mom must have been some sort of golden mix. He is a friendly boy and good with other dogs but we have not had the opportunity to see how he reacts to children.

Duxi is basically house trained but he does do some marking. He tested a light positive for heartworms so he has been started on Heartgard and 30 days of doxycycline. Normally 6 months of Heartgard will produce a negative on heartworm tests but there is the possibility that he will need further treatment.

Caterpillar Mostly Mutts Kennesaw

Caterpillar is a young male Hound mix who is available for adoption from Mostly Mutts in Kennesaw, GA.

I am a sweet, fun-loving and goofy gal who is ‘all-puppy’. I am super playful and seek attention, so I need a good leader to help me with some good socialization as my fun, energetic personality develops. I am vocal (barking) when bored, so plan to spend time being active with me. I can be pushy when I play and just need some good training to learn the ropes of a well-mannered companion. Fortunately, I am very smart and quite trainable / My energy level is 8-10 so let’s be very active together!

Thatcher Mostly Mutts Kennesaw

Thatcher is a male Chihuahua and Dachshund mix who is available for adoption from Mostly Mutts in Kennesaw, GA.

Charles Mostly Mutts Kennesaw

Charles is a senior male Chihuahua mix who is available for adoption from Mostly Mutts in Kennesaw, GA.

My foster says I’m a real sweetheart who is gentle & is a great couch potato that just want to enjoy my retirement. I sleep a lot – who wouldn’t at my age? I’m quiet too, just barking when I see someone outside – I have a deep sounding bark for a little guy & in my temp. foster home, I barked when I wanted pets – & to say please don’t stop the pets! During Thanksgiving when my foster family had lots of family over, I didn’t mind at all / I have a low energy level (1-3).

Nancy Southern Comfort Animal Rescue

Nancy is a young female American Bulldog mix puppy who is available for adoption from Southern Comfort Animal Rescue Services Inc in Glenwood, GA.

Born in the woods, Nancy and her siblings had a very rough start to life. With their mom also being a stray living in the woods, these pups were headed for a life as feral dogs. If that would have happened, they all would have struggled to survive as the woods also contain a number of elements that would have put their young lives at risk.

But thanks to a very kind-heated woman Nancy and all her siblings were were spared that fate, and given shelter, love and the necessities they needed to survive. Unfortunately, the mom was very elusive, her rescue attempts failed and she continues to live as a feral dog. The pups were still nursing when they were taken in and their foster eagerly accepted the task of bottle feeding them all until they were old enough to eat on their own. SoCo Rescue was able to take the litter in when they were approx 8 weeks old.

Adopt Todd Labrador Friends of the South

Todd is an adult male Labrador Retriever who is available for adoption from Labrador Friends of the South Inc. in Cumming, GA.

**Todd is not yet ready for adoption but we will update when he is. He is doing well with his heartworm treatment so far and is taking it all in stride. Todd’s still got some learning to do, but he is well on his way! Todd’s ideal forever family is one with another dog in the home, a fenced in yard, and no small children, as loud and fast movements still scare him.

Vincent Labrador Friends of the South

Vincent is an adult male Labrador Retriever who is available for adoption from Labrador Friends of the South Inc. in Cumming, GA.

Vincent is morbidly obese, there’s no other way to put it. When he got to the shelter, he weighed 163 pounds. He has already lost a few and now weighs 157 pounds, but he has a long way to go to get back to a healthy weight. Vincent should weigh around 75 pounds. Even 5 pounds of extra weight in dogs can lead to all kinds of health problems, including osteoarthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and shortened life spans, so it is very important to get Vincent back to a healthy weight. We have started him on a diet and exercise regimen to get him on the right track. Vincent also had a raging ear infection and skin infection on his belly when he came to us, so he is being treated for that as well.

Despite his obvious discomfort, Vincent has been a sweet boy and remains a happy-go-lucky guy. He loves him some booty scratches and back rubs. He was reported to do well with other dogs and cats, though he does NOT do well with children. For being so large and strong, he walks pretty well on a leash, though he does pull some when excited. Vincent will need to go to a home with an owner who understands how important it is for him to maintain a proper, healthy weight and will continue appropriate diet and exercise, even after he is back where he needs to be.

Milo Labrador Friends of the South

Milo is a young male Labrador Retriever who is available for adoption from Labrador Friends of the South Inc. in Cumming, GA.

Milo was found abandoned on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere Alabama. He LOVES other dogs, especially the active foster sibling. He plays hard but isn’t hyper; he’ll curl up for long naps. He hasn’t had a single accident in the house – not bad for a six month old puppy. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night.

Milo will need two things in his forever home: another active dog(s) and an owner with the patience to help him continue to gain confidence. He is a sweet, special boy and once his trust in people is restored he’ll make a great companion. And he’s adorable!
