BGR audit hits half-million dollar mark – The Cherokee Ledger-News: Top Stories

The forensic audit regarding the failed Ball Ground Recycling situation will top out costing $500,000 — Cherokee commissioners approved the final $95,674 charged by the forensic accounting firm McClendon & Associates at their Oct. 15 meeting.

The vote to approve the final amount of the audit, which initially had a price cap of $100,000, was unanimous. County Attorney Angie Davis said the accounting firm had essentially written off an additional $75,000 in expenses it had in relation to performing the audit.

County Commission Chairman Buzz Ahrens said Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace told him the audit consisted of about 2,300 pages.

“We don’t have a product where we can judge whether it is worth $500,000,” he said. “We have our civil case that is stayed until the end of this month. There are a lot of moving parts, as well as parts on hold. Chances are McClendon will be called to testify either through the DA in their findings or county in the civil case. There is likely to be more of a need for their services.“
