Chatham County commissioners say they aren’t ready to make a choice on whether to continue to share the costs of funding the Chatham County Recorder’s Court with the city of Savannah.
The board of commissioners Friday tabled for two weeks a proposed intergovernmental agreement that would re-establish the division of costs for the court system between the city and county.
Commissioner Patrick Farrell said prior to the meeting he would like more time to study the document before he casts his vote.
Friday’s discussion was in the wake of a Savannah Morning News report that at least one person facing misdemeanor charges in Recorder’s Court has been left sitting in jail for nearly three months without a hearing before a judge, while others have been arraigned but never returned to court. Many of them haven’t even been entered into the court’s filing system, according to a review of court records and interviews with court officials.
