Cooke introduces bill to arm firefighters – Times-Georgian: Local News

A Carrollton state lawmaker has introduced legislation to allow firefighters to carry weapons, but local fire chiefs say it’s unlikely that their crews will be armed anytime in the near future, even if the bill passes.

House Bill 807, authored by Rep. Kevin Cooke, R-Carrollton, and introduced last week, would give firefighters, with permission of their local departments, authorization to carry firearms, either openly or concealed, while on duty as firefighters.

In addition to Cooke, other local co-sponsors of the bill include Rep. Dustin Hightower, R-Carrollton, and Rep. Micah Gravley, R-Douglasville.

“I have had a number of firefighters in our local area and throughout the state approach me regarding this issue,” Cooke told the Times-Georgian by email Monday. “There have been a number of recent incidences of firefighters being ambushed or taken hostage, either within Georgia or other states. The aim of this bill is to allow firefighters, within the state of Georgia and with local department approval, to carry a weapon for personal protection. It is my hope that, with passage of this bill, the incidents that have occurred would stop in the future.

“I believe that the bill has a good opportunity to pass this session,” Cooke said. “At the time of this correspondence, there are 20 signers on this bill from all over the state and has bipartisan support.”
