SUGAR HILL — A faulty stormwater pipe brought Gary Pirkle to city hall nearly two decades ago.
And everything from a landfill issue to an asphalt plant kept the city in the spotlight.
“It seemed to be one controversy after the other, “If you went to a City Council meeting, that was more for entertainment than seeing anything get done. … I thought I could do a better job than they were, if not else, set a better tone.”
After four years on the City Council, Pirkle became mayor of the city during one of its biggest periods of growth, and he made sure that the focus was on the positive, not the negative.
At the end of the year, he leaves office after 12 years as mayor.
