Four New Judges Named in Columbus and Eastman

Gov. Nathan Deal has named three new judges in Columbus and one in Eastman….

Deal, who likes to elevate current judges, thereby creating new vacancies, named State Court Judge Maureen Gottfried to the Superior Court in Columbus, and J. Ronald Mullins, a partner at Page, Scrantom, Sprouse, Tucker & Ford. Both judges earned their law degrees from the University of Georgia.

To replace Gottfried in State Court, Deal tapped Muscogee County Solicitor-General Ben Richardson, who is African-American. Richardson earned his law degree from UGA.

The other two names on the JNC’s short list were Chattahoochee Circuit District Attorney Julia Slater and Assistant District Attorney Alonza Whitaker.

Deal’s appointment to the Oconee Circuit Superior Court bench is solo practitioner C. Michael Johnson, who also serves as Municipal Court judge for the cities of Eastman, Chauncey and Rhine. Johnson earned his law degree from Mercer University.
