The primary elections are months away but state Sen. Buddy Carter of Pooler is claiming victory in the latest round of fundraising in the 1st Congressional District race.

Carter’s campaign raised $157,310 from July through September, leaving him with $312,418 in cash on hand, according to his filing with the Federal Elections Commission. He leads the Republican field in fundraising in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, Savannah.

Tuesday was the deadline for federal candidates to file campaign disclosure reports.

“We’re humbled by our results,” Carter said Tuesday.

Carter, whose campaign reported its fundraising numbers last Friday in a show of confidence, said nearly 400 donors contributed in each of the 17 counties in the congressional district.

Savannah surgeon Bob Johnson raised $108,016 in the same filing period, finishing with $183,401 in cash on hand.

Brunswick state Rep. Jeff Chapman reported raising $77,996 in the third quarter with $88,402 on hand. David Schwarz of Isle of Hope reported raising $4,010. He finished the filing period without any cash on hand and announced earlier that he was suspending his campaign.
