Lingering disputes and future challenges were brought to the forefront Wednesday afternoon, as Savannah and Chatham County leaders discussed the future of the Savannah-Chatham Police Department in the wake of former Chief Willie Lovett’s sudden departure.
Savannah City Manager Stephanie Cutter suggested restructuring the police department’s Internal Affairs division to restore the department’s integrity during the police public policy committee meeting at City Hall.
Cutter said she wanted to examine the structure of Internal Affairs and consider alternatives to the way it operates. Cutter mentioned the possibility of having Internal Affairs report to an independent board rather than the police chief, due to what she said were concerns about the current arrangement that have been floating around for a while.
“It is definitely not something I want to push aside,” she said.
