Memorial sues city, county over unpaid bills | savannahnow.com

Memorial University Medical Center officials have sued Savannah and Chatham County in a flap over just less than a half million dollars in unpaid medical claims for police detainees treated at the hospital.

The suit, filed in Chatham County Superior Court, seeks $443,714.94 for costs of medical treatment from July 31, 2010, through Sept. 20 when the suit was filed.

In addition to the city and county, the Savannah-Chatham police department also is named as a defendant.

The suit contends Memorial provided medical treatment for about 100 detainees brought to its emergency room while in police custody. The suit identifies those individuals as unnamed “detainees” to protect their privacy.

Medical care was provided at the defendants’ request, but the bills for services have not been paid, the suit said.
