As various offices within the Macon Police Department and Bibb County Sheriff’s Office merge next year, it’s likely there will be fewer jobs for civilians.
Civilian employees at both agencies were sent a letter in June asking that they submit not just preferences for what job they want in the new government, but also a list of their skills, background and experience.
Sheriff David Davis said he hopes attrition will help match the current 92 police and 68 sheriff’s office civilian employees into the positions needed in the new combined sheriff’s office.
“If we find, once we merge everybody together, there’s room for everybody, that’s great,” Davis said. “But it’s not efficient for me to just keep somebody on … when I don’t really have a position for them. That’s waste and inefficiency.”
It’s possible that layoffs will be needed.
