Paul Nicholson eagerly looked forward to riding Savannah’s River Street streetcar during a visit from Australia in April.

The 1930s-era “tram” operated in his hometown of Melbourne until the 1990s, before being shipped here to transport tourists along the riverfront, Nicholson said.

Unfortunately, “Dottie”, which had been retrofitted with a diesel-electric engine to avoid use of overhead wires, was out of service.

After about four years of operation and maintenance issues, the weight of the customized hybrid system proved too much for the historic vehicle to bear. The streetcar recently took a detour to Pennsylvania for an $81,000 overhaul.
