Local Democrats voted to oust one of their own Monday from the Bibb County Board of Elections.

Steve Allen was the vice chairman of the county elections board, but his vote Thursday in favor of Sept. 17 for nonpartisan elections for the new consolidated Macon-Bibb County government drew the ire of the Bibb County Democratic Party Executive Board.

The elections board voted 3-1 for the September date instead of Nov. 5.

Members of the Democrat’s executive board said they have repeatedly voiced their position in favor of November elections and Allen’s vote for a September election went against the group.

“We know most Democrat voters come out in November. … My problem is you siding with Republicans on setting the September date,” state Sen. David Lucas, a member of the executive board, told Allen during Monday’s meeting before the group voted to remove Allen as their representative on the elections board.

“Nobody came to me with problems for September,” Allen said. “I decided to vote for September. I thought it was the right thing to do. If anyone would have come to me, it might have influenced what I did.”
