From the mailbag: Paul Broun crazy like a fox

From a reader comment in response to yesterday’s morning news email:

I happen to think Paul Broun is crazy like a fox by staking out the far-right in this state.
For one thing, it clearly shows up the differences between himself and Chambliss (who has moderated significantly over the years), thus shoring up the conservative vote, even if he does sometimes get Biden-esque in the effort. For another, there’s no way at this stage of the game that he can believably pretend to have moderated in his own right (thus picking up stray/disaffected liberal voters), and the attempt to do so will only worry most conservatives that he’s just another RINO who’s become liberalized by the D.C. Beltway media machine. It will also alert most voters of ANY stripe that he is yet another politician willing to do anything to get elected, rather than standing by principles long-held, which is something the Congressmen has (until this point) cultivated an image of doing.
To sum up, even nowadays there’s less ground to be lost in Georgia by planting yourself too firmly in the conservative wing than there is dipping your toe into the moderate/liberal waters, so why would you?
