The Georgia Department of Transportation recently paid $2.7 million to a consulting firm that searched files for 34 urban counties and found 9,268 unneeded parcels, some that include 100 or more acres, reports Morris News Service.
The consultants say 1,686 parcels surrounding cities that include Atlanta, Athens, Savannah and Augusta, would be attractive to buyers, while others are oddly shaped, wetland, or cut off from road access.
The marketable tracts may be especially attractive to buyers since they are close to highways. Some are at busy interchanges surrounded by development, Morris reports.
Morris said 2.7 acres in Gwinnett County is near the Braves’ minor-league stadium and hotel complex, while another 2.5 acres is on Interstate 85 at Riverdale Road near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. A 21-acre parcel on I-75 was to have been a rest area.
