Gwinnett Daily Post | Airport tower to remain open

LAWRENCEVILLE — Gwinnett County Airport’s air traffic control tower will remain open, as the Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday a plan to close 149 towers across the country has been canceled.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said new legislation allowed the department to transfer funds to end employee furloughs and keep the towers open through the remainder of the fiscal year, which were scheduled for June due to congressional sequestration.

“Sequester was about eliminating waste and duplication, but the FAA chose to use it to eliminate one of its most efficient programs: contract towers across the country and here in Gwinnett County,” U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall said. “It took an act of Congress to get the FAA to reverse that bad decision, but we pushed that bill through, and I am glad that the FAA has come around.”
