B.J. VanGundy endorsed for GAGOP Chair by Former Chair Bob Shaw

BjVanGundyEmailHeaderVia email:

Former GAGOP and Fulton County Chairman Bob Shaw has agreed to serve as Chairman of our campaign. I cannot express how humbled and honored I am to have the support of this Georgia GOP Legend. He has been a guiding force for Georgia’s Republicans in ways that have helped this party grow and prosper for more than 5 decades.

As Chairman of my campaign, Bob’s guidance and vision is now helping us to build on the foundations he set as we move toward the future with this Party. Please read the letter below and join Bob and me in our quest to assure that the GOP majority in Georgia is something that will last long into the future.

April 2, 2013

Let me tell you why I’m supporting B.J. Van Gundy for Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. If there is anything that I have learned in my 53 years of service to the Party it is recognizing those who have the vision and leadership to move the Republican Party forward. That is why, in 1969, I recruited Paul Coverdell to run for the State Senate and, in 1974, I encouraged Newt Gingrich to run for Congress.

For most of my life, we fought a battle that few thought could be won. We built a grassroots organization that would one day lead us to a Republican majority. Today, we find ourselves in a similar struggle. How do we continue to promote conservative values in Georgia when demographic trends tell us our days are numbered? We do so by electing a Chairman who will engage our members, our opponents, and those who have never heard what it means to a Republican. B.J. Van Gundy understands this. He knows that it takes more than outreach to change a person; it takes relationships.

We cannot run a state party based on national issues. Instead, we must run on the issues that affect all 159 counties in Georgia. We need a forward thinker, like B.J., who will appeal to that part of society that is looking for advancement based on their own achievement and not government handouts. We must listen to those who attend our meetings and we must focus our attention on that which unites us, not that which divides us. Our challenges are great but our opportunities are even greater.

When I joined the Fulton County Republican Party in 1960, I had no idea that it would become a lifelong and life-changing experience for me. By 1968, I was elected County Chairman and, in 1970, I was elected 1st Vice Chairman of the GAGOP. When our Chairman resigned, I ended up serving out what would be the first of three terms as Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. At the time, only 22 counties were organized, there were five Republicans in the Georgia Senate, 23 in the House, and two members in Congress.

We were told that there would never be a Republican majority in Georgia. We proved them wrong. Today, we are told that our days are numbered. We will prove them wrong once again. In order to do that, we need a Chairman who appreciates our past, understands who we are today, and has a clear vision for the future of the GAGOP. Having served as Gwinnett GOP Chairman, 6th and 7th Congressional District Chairman, and two terms as 2nd Vice Chair of the GAGOP, B.J. has been fighting for conservative values long before our current majority. His experience is greatly needed as we start a new chapter in the history of the Republican Party of Georgia.

It is time for a new generation of leaders to advance the conservative message in Georgia. It will take hard work, bold ideas, and an energetic Chairman to continue to lead us to victory. When we meet in Athens May 17-18, I ask that you join me in electing someone for Chairman who represents the future of our party, B.J. Van Gundy.

Robert J. “Bob” Shaw
