Federal authorities say a Sumter County commissioner has been convicted in a corruption case after he solicited and accepted bribes.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that a jury had found Al J. Hurley, of Americus, guilty of attempted extortion and federal program bribery. The verdict was read late Monday.
Officials say the 54-year-old commissioner promised to help award county contracting work to private contractors in exchange for money.
