Rep. Carter Presses for Obamacare Misstep Answers
- Today, Congressman Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-01) pressed for answers about serious recent Obamacare missteps, including the announcement last week from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that they had sent out 800,000 incorrect forms that Americans who used Healthcare.gov will need to file their taxes. During questioning, Carter raised serious concerns of the continued failures, “my daddy used to tell me ‘son that’s why pencils have erasers,’ I hope y’all have invested in an eraser factory because you’re going to need a bunch.”
Carter also led questioning on the lack of preparation for the ruling in the Supreme Court case King v. Burwell, which could dismantle Obamacare. “I think it’s pretty clear what they should rule, I think it’s pretty obvious those subsidies were intended for state run exchanges and not for federally run exchanges. It’s important in my state, the State of Georgia, because we have a federally run exchange and if those subsidies go away, what’s your plan? Do you have a backup plan?” Carter demanded.
Kevin Counihan, Director and Marketplace Chief Executive Officer for the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, testified during the hearing titled “From Health Care Enrollment to Tax Filing: A PPACA Update” held by House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits, and Administrative Rules. The hearing examined the ongoing implementation of Obamacare.
