State Names New Economic Development Commissioner

Upon returning from an official state delegation visit to Korea, China and Japan, Chris Cummiskey is leaving his post as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development to become chief commercial officer at a Southern Co. subsidiary.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced on Sept. 12 that Mr. Cummiskey is to be replaced by Chris Carr, who has served as U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson’s chief of staff since 2007. Previously Mr. Carr served as Mr. Isakson’s deputy chief of staff as well as campaign manager of his 2004 U.S. Senate race.

Mr. Cummiskey is to serve at the department until Oct. 11. Before assuming the post, Mr. Carr must be approved by the department’s board of directors.

At the Southern Power subsidiary, Mr. Cummiskey will lead the expansion of wholesale marketing activities, including business development, acquisitions and asset management.

Coincidentally, Mr. Cummiskey also worked for Mr. Isakson for three years as a liaison between the senator’s offices and the state legislature.
